Corsano wearable remote monitoring device for patients

First-of-its-kind wearable designed especially for surgical patients launches in the UK

Surgical patients across the UK can now benefit from new, wearable technology, a little like a wristwatch. It monitors vital signs in a discreet, unobtrusive way – providing key data to medical teams while allowing the patient more freedom and independence.

The Corsano solution, which launches this week in the UK, is a lightweight, water resistant, multi-sensor device designed for continuous remote monitoring of eight key vital signs from pre-op to post-discharge. These include heart rate, breathing rate, peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2), cuffless non-invasive blood pressure monitoring and ECG.

The device provides clinicians with this data in real time. What’s more, it has been designed to integrate seamlessly into existing clinical workflows. The aim is to reduce manual workload, enhance early detection of deterioration and support informed clinical decision-making – reducing the burden on busy hospital wards.

A 2014 study of monitoring practices in hospitals in the US found that manual checks of patients’ vital signs were ‘typically done every four hours, which leaves patients unmonitored 96% of their total time spent’ in general care. The Corsano device provides 24-hour monitoring, raising alerts where needed and helping clinicians to respond earlier to any concern. That in turn has the potential to reduce complications and prevent unplanned ICU admissions.

There’s already good evidence that such devices work: a 2018 study found that wearing a continuous monitoring device reduced patients’ length of stay in hospital by an average of 3.3 days. But the Corsano device can also be used after a patient is discharged from hospital, continuing to monitor vital signs when they are back at home.

The Corsano device is administered by clinical teams but has an easy-to-use patient-facing app to provide real-time data. It has battery life of seven days, is CE-MDR medically certified and has FDA clearance. In Western Europe, the device is distributed exclusively by medtech company Medtronic.

Peter Stas, CEO of Corsano Health BV, says: ‘Our mission at Corsano Health is to transform healthcare by delivering actionable insights that enhance patient outcomes—seamlessly, from hospital to home. Through this innovation, we aim to empower clinicians with advanced remote monitoring capabilities to simplify workflows and provide proactive care. Together, we are redefining connected care models to support the evolving needs of healthcare systems, addressing workforce shortages while enabling personalized and efficient patient management at every stage of care.’
