New £3.8m youth centre in Swindon

The Base is a purpose-built space for – and designed in collaboration with – children and young people, where they can socialise, learn and access support

A purpose-built new youth centre has opened in Swindon. The Base aims to be a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for young people aged 11-18 – or up to 25 if they have additional needs.

The £3.8m facility was designed in collaboration with local young people and will provide a range of activities from creative arts to sports. Services will include life skills workshops and mental health support. Advice on education, training and employment opportunities will also help young people develop skills and prepare for the future. It will be open throughout the week.

Swindon Borough Council worked with local charities WAY Swindon, Step Swindon and SMASH Youth Project to develop the Base. The project is part of the council’s wider Build a Fairer Swindon initiative.

An official opening was held last week, attended by children, young people, local partners, councillors and members of the community – who greeted the project with enthusiasm.

Kika, an 18 year-old Peer Advocate for the Youth Justice Service, says: ‘It’s a building with more than just aspirations. It’s dreams that’ll flourish into real life. It’s a place where people can develop, feel safe, have a sense of self and grow. It’s feeling liked and wanted somewhere. I look back on creating this with gratefulness. Not only has it given me an opportunity, but it’s given everyone else one too. It’s a child-led project, everything and more we could have dreamed for. It’s bang on.’

Ollie, a 19 year-old Leader at Way Swindon, adds: ‘It’s a fantastic space for young people to come. It’s a safe location, where they can build friendships, grow their mental health and other areas that can set them up for life. Whether that’s at the barista station or recording studio. If they have a passion they can pursue it. Young people can come and grow, whether that’s personal or professional.’

Cllr Paul Dixon, Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Care at Swindon Borough Council, says: ‘The Base is a fantastic addition to our community. It gives children a place that’s truly theirs; somewhere safe, supportive and full of opportunity. We’ve worked closely with local charitable organisations, and children themselves, to shape the facilities on offer, and we’re proud to see it open and already making a difference.’
